MANDATORY UNITS AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
KnowledgeTree Training Centre’s security courses operate on Basic Licensing Units (BLUs) to obtain a security licence from the Police Licensing and Regulatory Department (PLRD). The first few units fall under Basic Security Officer (SO) courses, which pave the foundation for progression in the security industry.
These basic security courses include Guard and Patrol, Access Control Management (Provide Guard and Patrol Services and Operate Basic Security Equipment), Incident Response (Handle Security Incidents and Services), and Threat Observation (Recognise Terrorist Threats).
The completion of three basic licensing modules at this level awards a security officer licence that can be used for relevant security jobs in Singapore. These modules also qualify for a WSQ Certificate in Security.
Moreover, individuals who successfully pass the SO courses will be deemed competent and ascend to the rank of Security Officer (SO) on the Progressive Wage Model (PWM). Get more information on the courses in each level below, and discover how this pathway can help you upgrade your certificate in security.

Singapore is regarded as one of the safest countries in the world, boasting a low crime rate coveted by countries far and wide. Confronted with a multitude of security challenges on the horizon, however, Singapore is in need of a reinforcement to counteract any risks that emerge. With terrorist threats on the rise, security services and personnel are expected to become more robust, adaptable and advanced.

EXPLORING A CAREER IN SECURITY: TYPES OF SECURITY PROFESSIONALS
Security is a dynamic industry that requires various types of security personnel to meet its ever-changing demands. Each role is as important, meaningful and integral as the next to ensure the protection of individuals, organisations and the community as a whole.
Here are some of the roles that you can find in this vibrant sector:
Security Guards: Surveying for potential threats to a premise, its people and assets is the primary duty of security guards. They operate basic security equipment to monitor for suspicious activities, and can be deployed as part of patrol services to deter crime and maintain a visible presence. Security guards are also trained to manage disorderly conduct appropriately.
Screening Officers: Screening officers, or security screeners are individuals who conduct security screening management and procedures at restricted or protected areas such as airports, government buildings and correctional facilities. They ensure compliance with prohibited items and prevent unauthorised people from gaining access.
Event Security Personnel: Maintaining the flow of an event and the safety of its attendees are the biggest priorities of event security. Seen at concerts, festivals, conferences, sports games and more, these personnel perform duties to ensure the success of an event, minimising disruptions and complications. They also conduct crowd control and can respond to conflicts and emergencies.
Traffic Controller: Traffic control management encompasses both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Traffic controllers direct, manage and control traffic flow at construction sites, events, and restricted or congested areas to prevent accidents, bottlenecks and disruptions.
Cyber Security: The world’s collective digital transformation has introduced a new realm that requires protection – the cyberspace. While largely different from physical security, cyber security is just as essential as privacy becomes a growing concern. Furthermore, global interconnectedness only means the divide between our digital and physical assets is disappearing. Information security is needed to effectively manage cyber attacks that harm, steal from or disable people, operations and infrastructure. It is an indispensable component of security, economic stability and privacy in our digital era.
Plenty of roles and companies exist in Singapore for aspiring security personnel to pursue. With KnowledgeTree’s broad range of programmes, you can soon be on your way to a prominent career in a stable, innovative and rewarding field that offers endless opportunities for personal and professional growth. PROGRESSIVE WAGE MODEL (PWM): FAIR WAGES, CONTINUAL UPGRADES AND CAREER PROGRESSION
The Singapore government has kicked off a programme aimed at supporting low-income workers. The Progressive Wage Model (PWM), a five-tiered wage structure, promises workers that they will receive fair compensation for their contributions and initiative to upskill.
As such, security staff are encouraged to continuously acquire additional skills that increase their value within the market. Undergoing relevant training to broaden their skillsets and diversifying their job responsibilities in accordance with the PWM guidelines can help existing security professionals move up in their career. Meanwhile, new candidates joining the security workforce will be required to take up basic security courses after applying for their security officer licence.
