Ever wondered what are the job opportunities in the security industry? Interested in knowing what the daily operations is like for a Security Officer (SO)? Based on an article by Straits Times (2020), demand for security officers spiked up in some locations which have pushed up the salaries significantly. The article also mentioned an advertisement post which offered a gross monthly salary of $3,200 in “green zone” dormitories which have been cleared of COVID-19.

“Buyers need to be prepared to pay higher prices as the demand now far outstrips the number of persons with security licences,” said the president of the Security Association Singapore, Mr Raj Joshua Thomas. He added that since the pandemic broke out, demand for security jobs has increased by around 10 per cent to 20 per cent.


1. Events Security

With conferences, summits, and events such as the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, International Champions Cup, World Cities Summit, Chingay and Singapore Airshow. Singapore is home to a variety of major events. The larger the event, the bigger the demand needed for security jobs to manage these events. 

You can expect your daily operations to include crowd control, security screening at entrances of event venues and monitoring the TraceTogether check-ins along with temperature tracking. With digitalisation in the security industry, you will also be trained to utilise smart technologies in your work processes to increase work efficiency!

2. Concierge Security

Your role as a Concierge Security Officer will not only be responsible in ensuring security safety of the exterior and interior of the property. You can also expect daily operations to include patrolling, escorting of VIPs, managing access control and ensure a safe environment for the tenants. When an emergency arises, it is up to you to provide emergency help to residents and tenants of the property.

3. Bar/ Club Bouncers

A SO’s duty in the nightlife entertainment industry such as a bar or club is to maintain a safe environment for the customers to enjoy themselves. This includes making sure that nobody is intoxicated and rowdy in the premise to prevent potential property destruction.

You can expect daily operations such as checking identity documents (IDs), verifying entry stamps, and bouncing out intoxicated patrons as a bouncer. Some of the skills that bouncers should have includes communication, decision making, observation skill, calm mindset, and strength.

4. Close Protection Officers/ Bodyguards

Ever wanted to be close to a VIP or high-profile person? As a close protection officer, you will be working with a team to provide continuous protection to the client when they are attending events and in the public.

Personal security jobs such as bodyguards require skills such as escorting clienteles, monitoring environment and defence skills. Skills such as having a calm mind, patience, and good observation skills makes a competent close protection officer.

5. Security Escorts

From escorting of vehicles carrying dangerous goods or over-sized cargo, to escorting and guarding prisoners or VIPs from point to point, these are some of the duties and responsibilities of a security escort.

Such security jobs are highly demanding and put the skills of the security officer to the test! You will need to be aware of your surrounding environment and people to ensure the safe delivery of the objective. As the first law enforcement officer on the scene should any incident happens, you will be tasked to ensure the safety of the area and minimise the impact it has on the public.

6. Private Investigator

Private investigation works requires you to carry out investigative works within the legal boundaries. The job scope of a Private Investigator (PI) varies across clienteles. According to an article by Straits Times, there is an increase in demand for ‘love spies’ amongst younger clients.

You will not only need to be aware of your surrounding environment and people, but also be able to use smart technologies which will help your investigative work.

Conduct Security Screening of Person and Bag (CSSPB)

In the CSSPB course, you should expect to learn skills such as: conduct screenings of a person using a handheld metal detector; conduct screening of a person using a walk-through metal detector; and perform a manual bag search.

Conduct Security Screening Using X-Ray Machine (XRAY)

Upon completing the XRAY course, you can expect to be proficient in identifying suspicious threats and prohibited items when using an X-ray machine. You will also learn how to perform the correct procedures and protocols on how operate an X-ray machine to screen a person’s bag based on PLRD regulations.

Learners from the CCTC course will be able to deal, manage and monitor various types of crowd behaviour. You will also learn to control and direct vehicle traffic and use hand signals to direct traffic confidently.

Learners from this course will be able to identify areas that may be susceptible to aggressive or threatening behaviour at their workplace. You will also learn how to approach individuals that are aggressive or threatening and handle these disputes appropriately.

Perform Investigation Activities in Compliance with Legal Requirements (PI)

Upon the completion of the PI course, you will have an in-depth knowledge of the job roles and responsibilities and legislative requirements of an investigator. You will also learn to conduct surveillance for investigation activities and eventually compile findings into a log sheet effectively.
