When to hire a private investigator

5 September 2022

Private detectives are in demand in Singapore. Private investigators (PI) take cases on all kinds of activities, from marital infidelity to domestic helper indiscretions. There are many types of work done by private detectives as they perform a wide variety of work, including (but not limited to): supervision of the movement of employees and key personnel, monitoring spouse to check for possible adultery, searching for missing persons or property, monitoring their children, gambling activities of family members, trademark or copyright infringing business matters, and general investigations to obtain evidence for use in civil or criminal cases.

PI’s tasks that require special approval from the Law

Under Singapore’s law, investigating political figures, foreign diplomats, consuls or their families, and surveillance of certain protected (or militarily sensitive) areas, foreign consulates, government buildings, departure and entry checkpoints or some private schools require special permission from the Singapore Police.

Illegal Tasks that PI cannot perform

Private detectives are required by law to undergo training and hold licenses issued by the Singapore Police Force. For this reason, the PI is able to advise the client on the legality of the methods used in the research. For example, the legality of hidden spy cameras depends on their use. Spycams are often used by PIs to film a target or location of an investigation, but within the limits of the law. Such cameras are usually only practiced in public or client-owned locations (eg. a client’s front door or living room to monitor the activities of a spouse or assistant). However, if the use of the spycam involves trespassing, insulting the modesty of a woman, or recording and storing obscene material, said use may be a criminal offense.

In the event of a divorce, the PI or client runs the risk of being sued or contradicted if illegal recording and monitoring methods are used. In addition, some activities such as hacking into individuals’ private digital accounts (such as Facebook accounts) may also violate Singapore laws such as the Computer Misuse Act.

Advantages Of Hiring a Private Investigator

Private investigators are licensed by the government to obtain information. They know what the law says. Hiring a private investigator can help minimize the risks associated with an investigation. You may have specific evidence, but the court cannot use your information because you are not licensed to do so. Hiring a private investigator not only helps minimize risks, but they can also testify on your behalf. The information presented to the researcher will be considered more credible and can be used to one’s advantage.

In addition, P.I can gather information in a more reliable and professional manner. This is due to their experience, training, and lack of emotional attachment. Many people who try to catch cheating spouses on their own failure. Most of them don’t even know where to start their investigation and it can take months to find evidence. This is due to the lack of research tools and skills needed for this job. In most cases, people become emotionally unstable while investigating their partners. For example, a person may fight with a partner before obtaining enough evidence. In this case, private detectives have the added advantage of conducting investigations in a more objective manner. Perhaps the biggest advantage of hiring a private investigator is that you don’t have to follow the suspect yourself.. Some suspects are very clever and will do anything to make sure they are not caught.. However, private investigators are trained on where to look and what traps to use to catch the suspects in the act.

Disadvantages Of Hiring A Private Investigator

On the other hand, hiring a private investigator has its drawbacks. One of the disadvantages of using a private investigator is the cost factor.
